Episode 3 – it’s a long one
One comment I have for this episode is the soundtrack or lack of in some cases. OMG it was good. This opening was fairly quiet with little music and little talking. We see shots of the army and each of our beloved characters as we wonder who will survive. Then the classical music at the end of the episode as the tension builds.
First, the red priestess, Melisandre, shows up after being banished and provides some firepower. UMM what was the plan before she showed up? Send the dorthraki charging in on a suicide mission? Seems dumb. Anyway, Jorah and Ghost are on the front lines with the dorthraki. Jorah retreats back but Ghost disappears…again. Another gush is the lighting in this particular scene. The episode is getting some hate for being too dark, but the lit swords charging looked so good. After they sent the dorthraki charging in on a suicide mission, Dany mounts Drogon for some air cover as the dead charge towards Winterfell. Jon joins on the other dragon.
The battle begins and I am stressed for the next 60 minutes.
Brienne gets pinned down, but Jaime saves her. The Night King summons a winter storm to make it hard to see for the dragons and the army. Arya gives Sansa the dagger that was used to try and kill Bran. She tells Sansa to go to the crypts and “stick them with the pointy end” which was a fun call back. Sam almost dies, but Ed saves him only to get stabbed in the back for his effort. (Yes, I finally learned his name once he died). RIP Ed.
They opened the gates for the retreating army. I didn’t know the plan at the time, but I felt like they kept the gates open too long. Turns out they had to Unsullied to protect the gate. Arya saves the Hound’s life with an arrow while he’s retreating. I loved this because they have grown from wanting to kill each other to protecting each other. Greyworm falls back with the retreat and makes the decision to clapse the bridge and burn the trench with his remaining men on the other side. With the clouds, Dany can’t see the signal to light the trench. The army tries arrows and torch bearers but nothing is working. Melisandre steps up with the help of Greyworm to provide the firepower. There is a moment of doubt as dead get closer and the fire doesn’t light. Good moment for her character, and she finally gets the trench lit. The assault pauses as the dead wait. The Hound has a PTSD moment with the fire.
The battle gets broken up with scenes from the crypt. Tyrion is feeling useless and wants to help. Sansa points out that they are all powerless. “The most heroic thing they can do now is to look the truth in the face.” Tyion comments that maybe they should have stayed married. Sansa remarks that he was the best of them (meaning Ramsey and I’m also including Joffery). He replies what a terrifying thought. I love their characters. Sansa ruins the moment again by pointing out they wouldn’t work because of their divided loyalties with Dany. There’s another good scene back in the godswood with Theon and Bran. Theon tried to apologize but Bran says the same thing that he did to Jamie. Everything they did in the past brought them here to this moment. Bran says Theon is home then peaces out to scout for the Night King as a raven. Night King decides to use that moment to order the dead to continuing the charge, using their own bodies to put out the fire and cross the trench. The dead continue to stack on top of each other to climb the castle walls. Great visual effects.
Jaime gets surrounded and Brienne saves him. Sam gets stucks again and Jorah saves him with the Tarly sword. Arya kicks some ass on the wall, but takes some hard hits after. The Hound finally snaps out of his PTSD when Beric points out Arya needs help. Poor Lyanna Mormont gets hit by a giant, but takes a stand. He crushes her in the saddest way possibly, but she gets the last word by stabbing him in the eye with dragonglass. RIP Lyanna. Also I applaud the David and Goliath moment with a little girl versus a freaking zombie giant. THIS. SHOW.
We get a good video game moment with Arya sneaking around trying to avoid the wrights in the library. They seemed to have forgotten there was a battle happening outside and was just browsing the books. Can’t say I blame them. Arya does the classic throw something as a distraction to get out of the room, only to make noise closing the door. Then we get a good horror chance sequence. Side note: Did arya use her new weapon from Gendry?? I saw a bow and a spear but no launcher? Was it the spear and I just missed it? Anyway, the Hound and Beric find Arya and save her. Beric throws his flaming sword and stays behind to give Hound and Arya time to escape. RIP Beric. They take shelter and happen to find Melisandre also in the room. I honestly forgot she and Arya met before. She says Beric’s purpose was to save Arya, so Arya could fulfill her prophecy. Blue eyes. Arya takes off leaving the Hound and Melisandre.
The three dragons fight in the sky with their riders until they manage to knock the Night King off. All the dragons take some damage in the fight. Dany finds the Night King on the ground, but quickly realizes dragon fire doesn’t hurt him. She retreats to avoid his spear and Jon charges from behind. The Night King raises the dead all over Winterfell to increase his army and cut off Jon specifically. Dany comes to Jon’s rescue since he’s surrounded, but manages to get thrown from Drogon in the process. Jon races to Bran’s aid. Getting surrounded herself, Dany gets rescued by Jorah. When the Night King raised the dead, this included the bodies in the crypt – where the women and children (and Tyrion and Varys) where hiding. Sansa and Tyrion hide behind a tomb while the women and children are getting attacked. Sansa takes out the danger and they nonverbally agree to go out fighting. I love their weird relationship.
The dead reach the godswood and the Ironborn hold their own for an impressive amount of time until Theon is the last one standing. Bran gives him the final confirmation that he is a good man. Theon charges towards the Night King and gets stabbed. RIP Theon
Jorah is defending Dany, but gets stabbed one too many times…RIP Jorah. Got to give it to Dany for picking up a sword and trying to contribute.
Jon races towards Bran, sees Sam in trouble, AND CONTINUES MOVING. I GET IT’S THE GREATER GOOD BUT HELP A BRO OUT. Viserys shows up and Jon can’t get past. I was kinda hoping for a Jon is a Targaeryn so he can’t burn reveal, but we didn’t get that. A lot of people are complaining about the dragon fight considering it destroyed the wall, but can’t kill Jon. Jon faces the dragon and yells. I read a theory that this was to let Arya pass. Another side note (sorry not sorry): I liked this moment for Jon’s character although I don’t know what it means. He lost Battle of the Bastards and Sansa came to the rescue. He lost Battle of Winterfell and Arya came to the rescue.
Bran and the Night King have a bit of a staring contest and I wonder if there’s anything deeper then the “I’m about to kill you”/”I’m about to die”. I don’t have motivation for either character and it annoys me. Do they have history? Anyway, Arya shows up ex machina and kills the Night King. The wrights clapse and the battle is over. Bran does another stare with Arya and I can’t tell if he’s not surprised, impressed, sad…WHAT IS HE THINKING?! The survivors stumble around in shock that they actually survived. Melisandre walks out to the open field, takes off her eternal youth necklace, and dies. RIP Melisandre.
Note: we saw the extinction of House Mormont and I’m upset
