I’m a little behind on getting this out since Raya premiered 2 weeks ago. But I paid the $30 to watch so you don’t have to! I’ll try to keep it spoiler free.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It featured a strong female warrior who has to heal a world of distrust. Also, it’s not a musical. Also also, great Southeast Asian representation.
The movie opens with exposition. Dragons good, Druun bad. Dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity from being turned into stone statues. Part of the sacrifice was Sisu’s gem which became coveted by all tribes. The once united kingdom of Kumandra became the 5 tribes (Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, Tail). The exposition transitions into young Raya having warrior training with her dad, the King of Heart, to become a guardian of the dragon gem. Can I just add, Raya’s sidekick Tuk Tuk is the CUTEST (also voiced by Alan Tudyk). There is more background into the different tribes as the King announces he invited all the enemies over for dinner. Even I think that’s a bad idea. Raya bonds with the Princess of Fang AND TAKES HER TO SISU’S GEM. There’s trust and then there’s just stupid. Princess of Fang, Namaari, sends up a flare once she locates the gem and bad stuff ensues. Long story short, the gem breaks releasing the evil Druun and each tribe gets away with a piece. The Dragons provided water and the Druun avoid water. The gem pieces can also be used as a shield. Heart is basically petrified in the process.
Flash forward 6 years. Raya has been searching for Sisu, the last dragon. Sisu is voiced by Awkwafina who was perfect for this role. The character is reminiscent of Eddie Murphy’s Mushu and Robin Williams’ Genie. Another side note, but am I the only one that wants to try Jackfruit jerky? Namaari has been tracking Raya to get the scroll Raya has been using as a map. Going forward I will be calling stink bugs “Toot ‘n Boom”. Raya works with Sisu to gather the other pieces of the gem to save the world – again. As they travel, they meet up with shrimp kid, con baby, and lonely warrior. “Fellowship of Druun butt-kickery”. Shenanigans ensue. The world is ending. The world is saved.
The main conflict is Heart versus Fang. Heart wants unity and peace. Fang wants to protect themselves. Raya starts out with her father’s ideals of trust, but once that trust is broken, she has to learn to trust again. Namaari believes she’s doing what is best for her people. She had a harder childhood than Raya and feels resentment. Initially, they think taking Sisu’s stone will help. When the Druun are unleashed, they think possessing the gems and Sisu herself will protect them. Queen of Fang doesn’t even want to help save the world. She thinks everyone will blame Fang for what happened if they come back. If they possess the gems and Sisu herself, they could save the world and more importantly their people will be safe. She has an ends justify the means approach.
Related to the theme of trust, there is also an emphasis on gift giving. Sisu tries to explain to Raya that in order to get trust to have to give trust. Sisu is repeatedly trying to solve their problems by giving their enemies presents, which doesn’t always work out. In another conversation where Raya is again trying explain the modern world, she says the world is broken so you can’t trust anyone. Sisu replies with the world is broken because you can’t trust anyone.
Anyway the real question you all want to know – “Is this worth $30?”. If you’re like me and a huge Disney fan, I say it’s worth a watch. It’s definitely worth the price if you have a family or friend movie night. Still cheaper than a trip to the theater. Otherwise, you can wait until June 4 to watch for free on Disney+.
We drove into the area late Friday night and prepared to spend Saturday and Sunday exploring the valley. We did luck out and stayed at a local friend’s cabin, so I can’t provide lodging recommendations. Also, our friend was happy to be our tour guide so we had some nice connections during the trip. Since we were there off-season, we had to get reservations to access the park. I highly recommend visiting in February because it was perfect weather and less crowds. Unfortunately, some of the sites on my wish list were closed for renovations or winter weather. Another perk of going in February is the Firefall which I’ll go into later. We did both days with an ADA pass and most of the sites were easily accessible for people with disabilities.
Saturday –
Because of our cabin’s location, we drove into the valley through El Portal Road. We pulled off the road for our first vista – Valley View. It was a nice overlook, but I was insistent on seeing Tunnel View as well so we had to cross the Pohono bridge and U-turn for that vista. On the way, we ended up pulling over in a field with snow and a nice view of Bridalveil. We had a quick snowball fight before continuing to the second overlook. After several pictures at Tunnel View, we continued down Wawona Road to Bridalveil Falls. The trail to the Falls was closed due to the Rehabilitation Project, but the view is still nice from the road. We continued down Southside Drive towards the Chapel. Since we got a later start, it was past lunch time and the Chapel made a nice picnic spot with a view of Yosemite Falls. After lunch, we crossed Sentinel Bridge to get a closer look at the Lower Yosemite Falls. We parked at the Yosemite Lodge, but I don’t think that’s usually allowed. The trail was flat and paved which allows everyone to get a close view of the falls. If you get it at the right angle, you can get a great view Upper and Lower Falls.
Now I really wanted to do Glacier Point, Sentinel Done, and Taft Point for golden hour pictures, but the road is closed from November to May. Instead, I settled for Columbia Rock on the Yosemite Falls Trail. This hike is moderate to strenuous with rewarding views of Half Dome. Columbia Rock is 2 miles round trip with a 1,000 ft elevation gain. If you continue another 0.5 miles, you get a beautiful view of Upper Yosemite Falls. We were short on time and I regret not hiking that extra mile for the waterfall. The hike goes on a few miles more if you’re really ambitious and want to get to the top of the Falls. The trail itself was so well maintained. As I was gasping for air, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the design and upkeep. This hike is steep, but honestly doable if you take it slow. Again, we were rushed and had to push ourselves.
After our hike, we literally ran to Horse Tail Falls for sunset. On rare occasions in mid to late February, the waterfall glows orange during sunset which makes it look like lava. The reservations to enter the park were due to the popularity of the event. Most people reserve spots hours ahead of time. We ran on the road and snapped pictures at each angle which honestly worked.
Sunday –
We drove in through El Portal Road and but continued straight through the valley towards Half Dome. The Half Dome cables were down for the season, but this hike is on my bucket list to circle back to eventually. Instead we did the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls. The hike is moderate to strenuous with views of two waterfalls. The Vernal Falls Footbridge is 1.6 miles round trip with a 400 foot elevation gain. Honestly, this was as far as we made it. We tried to go to the top of Vernal Falls, but that section of the Mist Trail was closed for Winter. You can still get to the top using the John Muir trail, but we didn’t have time for that detour. If you keep hiking, you get a view of Nevada Falls. Most of the websites I checked recommended combining the Mist and John Muir trail into a 7 mile loop for both waterfalls. Like I said, we kept it at 1.6 miles. This trail was also paved and doable if you take it slow. We even saw someone pushing a stroller up the slope!
Next stop was Mirror Lake. It’s 2 mile round trip on a paved road to the lake and back. There is an additional 5 mile loop around the lake. Since we were taking advantage of our ADA pass, we drove up to the lake for parking and saved so much time. The lake is best in the spring and early summer when it’s full from melted snow. There’s a beach that offers the best pictures, but we walked a bit further down the lake to find the reflection of the mountains (hence the name Mirror Lake).
One of the big things on my Must-Do list was climbing El Capitan. It took awhile to find the trail to the base, but we rushed to find it before the sunset. We found a spot to climb and went about 10 ft up for pictures. Not quite as impressive as the full 3,000 ft, but I can officially say that I have climbed El Cap. I just didn’t make it to the summit.
Again, we literally ran to make sunset. We picked the parking lot across Sentinel Bridge ahead of time. The bridge offered beautiful views of Half Dome glowing from the sun. The parking lot also has a view of Yosemite Falls (Upper and Lower).
Overall, we saw everything we could and had so much fun! Now I have to go back to see everything that was closed for Winter.
Remember when travelling internationally was a thing before COVID?
This trip was a check off of my bucket list and a birthday trip for my mom. Let’s just say it was rough from start to finish, but we loved our adventure. Also, this trip was the first I didn’t journal at the time, so this is based on year-old memories and Facebook.
We got a redeye from Newark to Rome. We even managed to get fancy first class sits! When the flight attendant offers free mimosas, you say yes. We took off and I settled in for the next hour and a half until the Pilot announced we had to go back to Newark for an emergency landing. I heard it was maintenance issues with the bathroom? Seriously, this would only happen to us. I was super tired and cranky as we waited to re-board the plane. Thankfully, 5 hours later, we were on our way again. Side note: Being standby, we have to dress up. But being a long redeye flight, I wore a nice maxi dress with comfy leggings underneath which worked perfectly!
Day 1 in Rome: I found us an apartment through Airbnb right by the Trevi Fountain which ended up being a good location. We took the shuttle from the airport to the city to check in and change. We spent the day exploring the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo. I architecture geeked out at the Pantheon. At the Spanish steps, we stopped at a café for tea and cookies. It was relaxing to sit and enjoy the air conditioning and wi-fi. From there, we continued to the Piazza for a view of the city at sunset. On the way back to our apartment, we went through the shopping section and got some fancy dresses.
Day 2 in Rome: I didn’t sleep at all during the night (thanks jetlag) so I was incredibly cranky for the day. We woke up at dawn for pictures at the Trevi fountain and Colosseum with no crowds (except influencers and models lol). I actually highly recommend this. Since your body is adjusting to the time change take advantage to see the sites before everyone else. We were able to get amazing pictures with no one in the background.
I didn’t know ahead of time, but the Pope speaks every Wednesday at the Vatican. This coincidentally worked with our schedule. From our apartment, we took the metro to Vatican City for the 9:30 message. I was tired, hungry, and overheated, but I found a spot in the shade where I could lean against a column and still listen. We also had a tour group scheduled after the service to see the museums and Sistine Chapel. It’s important to note that several of the church’s have a required dress code for modesty, so pack accordingly.
After the Vatican, we took the metro back to the Colosseum for the second time of the day. This time for a tour with all the other tourists. We did the basic walkthrough, but it would have been cool to explore the tunnels underneath. We called it a day after that because of heat and exhaustion. We ended up having dinner at a Italian restaurant walking distance from my apartment which had a live harpist, classy Italian food, and limoncello – which became a favorite of mine.
Day 3: We packed up our luggage and took the metro down to Pompeii. We left our bags at a locker while we explored the area. The city was so cool and I was definitely nerding out. We spent most of the day there before continuing down to Sorrento where we caught a ferry to Capri for the night. Capri is a gorgeous island, but I didn’t plan this as well as I should have. Our hotel was on the other side of the island in Anacapri, because I was trying to avoid overpaying at hotels, but we wasted so much time and energy going back a forth on the crazy roads that we should have just paid for the convenience. Anyway, when we arrived late that night, a taxi driver took pity on us and helped get us as close as he could then the hotel driver picked us up from there. Turns out there was a festival of some sort that closed the roads and made it harder on everyone.
Day 4: In the morning, I scheduled a private boat tour so we had to take the public bus back to where the ferry dropped us off. The tour was great and honestly the highlight of the trip. We showed up late so we missed Blue Grotto, but we got to spend the day on a private beach after the boat ride around the island. The beach had a restaurant so I enjoyed fresh seafood (it still had it’s head…ew) and more limoncello. I even took a nap on the beach chairs and got sunburned. There is a chairlift in Anacapri that offers amazing views, but we were stressed and spent the day enjoying our beach time. I think the water was technically the Gulf of Naples, but it’s close enough that I can claim it was the Mediterranean, right?
Day 5: We didn’t want to deal with the bus again so we paid for a taxi to drive us and our luggage down the hill. We took the ferry to Naples and immediately hopped on a train to Florence. Didn’t even stop for pizza! Also I love the European train system. It’s so easy. I found another apartment in the city through Airbnb to stay at. We freshened up before checking out Brunelleschi’s dome, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the other amazing architecture. We were short on time so we did not see Michelangelo’s David, but we saw the postcards. That night was probably the best meal we had – and probably most embarrassing. I happened to find Buca Lapi on the map with no context, but it was so cool. The atmosphere and food was amazing. We drank too much and talked too loud.
Day 6: We took the another train to Pisa for Mom’s birthday! We put our luggage in a locker again since this was a quick day trip. We had a lot of fun taking photos with the tower. We even got to climb the tower and took pictures from the top. The steps were definitely hard to climb with the whole leaning thing. We toured Piazza dei Miracoli and the on site Cathedral. We didn’t fit dress code for this church so we had to wear provided ponchos. We took the train from Pisa to Rome, but we got stopped for 3 hours with no Wi-Fi. The employees didn’t speak English, so most of the passengers we just confused and angry with the delay.
Overall, I planned too much in a short time and there was a lot of travel time that could have been simplified. Instead of doing Rome, down to Naples, back up to Florence, then back down to Rome, I should have focused on one region. Rome and Amalfi Coast or Rome, Florence, and Tuscany. Eventually, I want to go back for Venice and Verona. There’s just too much to see! I’m glad we did what we did since that was our last big trip with international travel being shut down.
The warrior princess got her own live action movie and I paid the $30 Disney + Premier Access to see it a few months early. Obviously there are some differences between the 1998 animation and the 2020 live action. I’d say spoiler free but everyone already knows the plot so how much can actually be spoiled.
Disclaimer: I am reviewing an enjoyable Disney live action movie. I will not be discussing the movement to boycott the movie in today’s cancel culture. All I will say is can we enjoy a strong female lead movie without bring politics into it?
We open with young Mulan which was a nice touch of backstory. Her parents and sister start discouraging her from using her natural kick-butt talent – because dishonor and sexism. Years pass and it’s time for Mulan to meet with the matchmaker, which goes about as well as you can expected. Right after, the army rolls in to recruit her father. Mulan steals her father’s gear and runs off to take his place in the army. Meanwhile, the invaders are killing along the silk road and stopping trade. They have a witch who has basically all the abilities – possession, shape shifting, and magic fighting. The leader of the army is looking for revenge after the Emperor killed his father. Instead of a quirky side character, Mulan’s spirit guide is a powerful phoenix that leads Mulan through her journey. Instead of the general’s son being hot boyfriend goals, there is no Shang in the way I expected, but I’m happy with how they handled it. She still has those awkward moments with her fellow soldiers like sleeping arrangements and hygiene. The movie is not a musical, but there’s still a training montage. Eventually they get called out to assist a garrison at the front. The battle commences on an open field in typical epic fashion. To my delight, the battle ends with an avalanche and Mulan’s identity coming out. Mulan got banished, found out the enemies plans, and returned to save the Emperor. There’s more fighting and winning. Mulan saves China and brings honor to her family.
First of all nothing about the movie was “bad”. I just have some complaints. The smallest being the lack of sassy grandma. What is a Disney movie without the sassy grandma? The big complaint I have is the witchcraft. I was hoping this movie would be realistic and follow some of the rules of physics. Instead they use Chi as a supernatural magic. If girls have it, they are witches. If boys have it, they are great warriors. *heavy feminist sigh* Anyway, I’m all for including chi and respecting Chinese cultural, but it came off as “use the force”. I was expecting a historical war movie, but should have remembered it was made by Disney.
I really enjoyed all the little nods to the first movie. They didn’t remake it exactly and they didn’t change it too much. I think it was a healthy mix of both. Like I said before, there are no songs, but some of the original themes are instrumental pieces in the background. Reflection being the most recognizable, but there are some others. I also loved the characterization, but that’s usually my favorite part. Mulan is less funny than her animated predecessor, but she still has those small moments that make her relatable. She is confident and brave. Her father is proud of her even in the beginning, but feels compelled to follow societies expectations. The witch was probably the most interesting character with her arc. She started out like Mulan, but turned to the dark side after being unaccepted and dishonored. She asked Mulan to join her, but Mulan insisted loyalty to the Emperor. When she saw Mulan leading the army of men, she decided to help by leading her to the Emperor.
Overall, it was an enjoyable movie that I recommend Disney fans watch. Maybe not $30 worth, but you can get a (Covid approved) watch party together and have a movie night. You can also wait until December to avoid the additional charge. We all knew the story from the first movie and I was looking for some additional depth to this one. I don’t know if it’s the best live action adaption (I’m partial to the Beauty and the Beast remake), but it’s up there with some of the other good ones (Lion King, Cinderella, Aladdin). I’ll definitely be rewatching to soak it up more.
Before I even go into the trip itinerary, there were a few speed bumps that I hit before the trip. I left for my parents house on a Sunday. I drove the 4 hours and made it home for dinner. Maybe an hour later, I realized I left my passport in my apartment. We looked into all the options – expediting, getting a new passport…There was no other choice than for me to drive back and get it. Thankfully, my super caring roommate agreed to meet me halfway so I only did 4 hours of extra driving. Yay. My brother and I had plans to watch the Game of Thrones series finale that night, but I had to make my drive instead. We stayed up and watched a later showing when I got back which meant a 1-2 am bedtime. Not to mention I had to wake up for work at 6 am Monday morning. I worked for a full day then left for the airport around 4 pm for our redeye flight. Being standby, it’s hard to plan vacations, but thankfully all four of us made the flight and were content with our middle seats. In flight entertainment featured: Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary Poppins, and Into the Spiderverse.
Day 1: Edinburgh
We arrived early Tuesday, May 21 in Edinburgh. After many arguments with the parents, I was wrong and the city name is not pronounced like it’s spelled. Onto the logistics! We rented a sedan and booked hotels as we went. Mom prefers Budget and I tend to lean towards AirBnb. Since Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, it’s important to remember the driver sits on the right side and the cars drive on the left side. It was still too early to check into the hotel so we parked the car below Edinburgh Castle and jumped into tourist mode.
First stop was a little cafe for breakfast. The family chose more American options, but I went full “When in Scotland”. Turns out I’m a fan of haggis, beans, mushrooms, and eggs for breakfast. For those wondering, haggis sounds gross (trust me and don’t google it), but it tastes very savory with all the spices and flavors. We were all tired from jet lag, but getting food in our stomach gave us the necessary energy to explore the Royal Mile. We started with Victoria Street which was the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. We stopped by the Elephant Cafe where Rowling actually wrote the books! To continue the Harry Potter tour we went to Greyfriars Kirk (church) and Greyfriars Bobby (dog statue). The Greyfriars Kirkyard was where Rowling found the names for her characters and made a fun cemetery scavenger hunt for us. We continued walking the Royal Mile, toured St. Giles Cathedral, and watched a street performer. We ended the afternoon with a tour of Edinburgh Castle which overlooks the city.
I do want to point out there are multiple castle tour packages offered to save you money. I’ll try to dig up old receipts (I save everything), but I can’t remember the name at the moment. I know there was one for the lowlands with Edinburgh, Stirling, and a few others. We had another option for the highlands.
After a long, exhausting day exploring Edinburgh, we went back to the car and got checked into the hotel which really had more bed and breakfast vibes. We took a long afternoon nap. Mom stayed in to rest while the rest of us went out for some nightlife. We Ubered to George IV Bar, a traditional pub, for fish and chips with a pint. We even got live music. We stopped by Royal Mile Tavern for real Scottish whiskey and more live music, but it was crowded so we didn’t stay long. Final stop of the night was Banshee Labyrinth which was a modern theme bar with multiple rooms and even a movie theater. Eventually we turned in to sleep before a long day of castles.
Day 2: Castles on way to Loch Lomond
Starting off with my personal favorite, Midhope Castle. AKA LALLYBROCH. Day 1 was a lot of Harry Potter, but beware the rest is a lot of Outlander. Check the Midhope website. The Castle is privately owned and is only available for certain days. You also have to purchase a parking pass. You can’t go inside, but pictures of the front are the best view anyway. We chatted with the parking attendant while buying souvenirs and he recommended we add Blackness and Linlithgow Castles to our list. Blackness was a super cool design for a castle and was nicknamed “The ship that never sailed”. For Outlander fans, this was the location where Captain Randall nearly whipped Jaime to death. Linlithgow Palace was used for a jail scene in Outlander, but it is more famously known as the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. If you’re not a history nerd, she was super cool. The palace had a beautiful cathedral out front and took the opportunity to rest our legs and listen to a 10 minute reading and prayer. We were running out of time in our schedule, but we rushed through Stirling Castle and the gardens. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned at this castle and Bonnie Prince Charles tried to take control of the castle during his rebellion. Another worthy wikipedia study is Prince Charles.
We arrived at Doune Castle 30 minutes before they were closing. This was a family favorite. It’s really out in the middle of nowhere but I highly recommend this one if you’re a fan of Monty Python especially. The castle is also used as Winterfell in Game of Thrones and as Castle Leoch in Outlander. We rushed through the castle, but spent most of our time galloping around clicking our souvenir coconuts together and quoting The Holy Grail. We buckled in to drive to our room in a house off of Loch Lomond. I will say I initially scoped in a half day at Glasgow, but I don’t think we missed anything. Glasgow is a modern city with a lot of museums and galleries. We prefered the castles in the middle of nowhere.
Day 3: Loch Lomond and Loch Ness
This day was a lot of driving to get to Inverness. We started off with Balloch Castle which was at a local park down the road from the house we were staying at. From there, we began our scenic drive along Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. There is a famous scenic outlook in Glen Coe that I was trying to find, but it was a time consuming trip for hikers and not for quick road trips. We did a quick walk around the National Park Visitor Center to stretch our legs. After getting a little lost, we finally made it to the Glen Nevis gondola just before they closed. While there was no visibility at the peak, we did enjoy a quick snack and watching the extreme bike trails going down the mountain.
We continued our drive along Loch Ness and stopped at Urquhart Castle. We missed the opportunity to tour the inside since it closed by the time we got there, but we got pictures from the overlook. Finally, we arrived at the AirBnb house I booked in Inverness. We walked from the house to the city for dinner at a fancy place by the river. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to tour Inverness Castle with our schedule, but it’s worth checking out if you can.
Day 4: Culloden and Cawdor
We talked about circling back to see more of Loch Ness and Urquhart. We probably could have, but today wasn’t one of my better planned out itineraries. Instead, we continued on east to Culloden Battlefield which I definitely geeked over. Culloden had a museum, cafeteria, and gift shop all set up indoor, as well as walking trails in the battlefield. Free audio tours provided for the museum and outside. Dad and Bradlee appreciated this more than my other stops because it’s a historical battle. Mom was less interested.
After exploring, we stayed for lunch at the cafeteria and drove on to Cawdor Castle and gardens. A nice change to the castles we were seeing because this one was furnished and lived in. Think Downton Abbey or the Biltmore in North Carolina. It was really beautiful. The gardens included plants and trees from around the world. We were especially surprised to spot Redwoods in Scotland! We grabbed a snack in the cafe before leaving. Sueno’s Stone was an optional item for me and I wished we skipped it. We continued west and found Sueno’s Stone tucked behind a residential neighborhood. It was definitely impressive, but not cool enough to justify the extra drive time. We went back to Inverness for pizza and whiskey.
Day 5: South to Edinburgh
If you have more time, you can add Aberdeen and see the eastern coast of the country, but we were out of time and quickly running out of energy. We drove around Cairngorms National Park to find Dunsinane Hill. We got lost and gave up, but I wasn’t too disappointed. I also planned on touring Falkland Palace, but we stopped at Perth for lunch and ended up staying. We toured Blackwatch castle and crashed a wedding. There was also some sort of festival downtown, but we didn’t stick around for that. We continued to our hotel outside of Edinburgh airport and took a nap before finding dinner. We ended up at a fish and chips place down the street. We turned in early since we had a morning flight home. We also did a lot of airport souvenir shopping, but I had to buy all the tartan.
Overall, it was the first vacation with all four of us in a long time and I’m honestly just impressed we didn’t kill each other. I think the trip provided something for everyone – movie locations for me, historical locations for the boys, and castles for Mom. Maybe next time I’ll talk them into doing a backpacking trip around Skye.
With theaters being closed with the recent pandemic, a lot of movies are not earning the box office numbers they expected. Most movies are pushing their releases until everything is back to normal. Some are having digital releases available for people to purchase and watch from the comfort of their home.
I initially saw Onward in theaters right before they closed, but it is currently available for digital purchase and will have an early release on Disney+ on April 3rd. Since most people will be waiting to watch Onward in April, I figured I can give my spoiler-free review of the movie now.
Characters: Like any classic Pixar movie, we start with family coping with a death. In this case, it’s a mom with two sons. The oldest son, Barley, is a huge geek. He is loud and loves role-playing games. He’s confident, but often screws up. Ian is the youngest and true protagonist of the film. Ian looks up to the dad he never met, but lacks the confidence to follow through on goals. I’m going to say it now. The mom was my favorite side character. She is also dealing with the loss of her husband, trying to be there for her boys in the most BA way possible, and dating a new man…horse…manhorse. The centaur boyfriend is also a great supporting character. He is a tough cop, but he tries to be a fun, sensitive boyfriend/father figure to the Lightfoot family. Corey is hilarious. She’s a killer monster who lost her identity until she teams up with Laurel (Mom) to help the boys. Final character worth mentioning is the dad. Wilden somehow portrays the classic dad stereotype without having a top half the whole movie.
Backstory: There used to be magic in the world, but it was challenging to learn. Technology came along, people got lazy, and magic was forgotten.
Plot: Open with Ian’s 16th birthday. He’s having trouble fitting in and conquering his fears. The mom gives them the present from their dad containing a wizard staff and phoenix stone. Ian has a natural ability with magic, but only brings back half of the dad’s body. Barley uses his history “Quests of Yore” knowledge to search for another phoenix stone. The boys leave on a quest with their dad to find the phoenix stone within 24 hours so they can spend time with him. Adventure ensues. Barley starts training Ian on spells he can use. Siblings bond. Siblings fight. Spoilers ensue. Tear jerker ending.
Obviously, the movie is FULL of nerd Easter eggs and I loved every single one of them. I will say this is a good movie for non-nerds as well. Again like most Pixar movies, it has a strong family message that makes everyone ugly cry. Kids will enjoy the magic and the creatures. Shout out to gelatinous cube. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to be remembered as one of the classic movies to look back on, but it is definitely worth a watch.
I did the Daniel Fast 2 years ago during the month of February. While I complained about how hangry I was every day, I did see amazing results. Note: You’re not supposed to complain while fasting, but I’m only human. Sorry, God. Once the 3 weeks ended, I found that fried or sugary foods were not appealing and actually made me sick. Since then, I have slowly regressed to my unhealthy young adult diet. I am good with eating fruits and salads, but the junk food cravings have returned. This led me to my decision to fast again after the holidays. I was exclusively eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. This eliminates processed foods, additives, preservatives, flavorings, sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, oils, and products made with white flours.
The Daniel Fast is based on the fasting in Daniel 1:5-16 and 10:2-3. When Daniel and other Israelites were taken by Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel refused the rich Babylonian diet and requested vegetables. They continued with the diet throughout their training since they proved to be physically and mentally healthy. In Daniel 10, Babylon was conquered by another ruler and Daniel had no meat, wine, or rich foods during his mourning fast. Nowadays it is more of a diet trend given new popularity since Chris Pratt mentioned it in an interview. The first time I did the fast, I found an accompanying bible study to work through and tried to focus on the spiritual element as well. This time was more diet focused.
Here are some of my favorite recipes and overall experience with the diet.
Week 1:
Breakfast mostly consisted of a fruit salad with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Sometimes with oats to mix it up. I used two recipes for lunch throughout the week. One was a chickpea and sweet potato stew and the other was a simple vegetable stir fry. https://www.healthy-liv.com/sweet-potato-and-chickpea-stew/ Snacks included more fruit (apples, oranges, and grapes) and vegetables (bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes). I don’t usually eat dinner, but for this week I made some whole wheat quesadillas with the leftover stew. I tossed in some spinach and avocado to help bind the rice. For the weekend, I made some banana crepes. I’m not a fan of bananas, but I do enjoy these. http://todaysdanielfastrecipe.blogspot.com/2011/01/whole-wheat-crepes.html?m=1
I also had soup and salad to keep it simple. Overall, I felt awful. I mostly kept my cravings under control and my hunger was satisfied, but I had killer headaches. I don’t know if the migraines were diet related or not, because I also work full time and do Jiu Jitsu. I think I’m just adjusting. My bowels are also adjusting.
Week 2:
Day 8 and I cheated. Just a little bit. I should feel ashamed, but it was worth it =) I don’t know if it’s because I wanted Pringles or because the can was already half empty and I felt the need to finish it. Breakfast consisted of overnight oats or other assortments of fruit. Lunch for the first half of the week was a Mediterranean salad with chickpeas, veggies, and olives. The second half was a Asian flavored veggie stir fry. https://thesuburbansoapbox.com/mediterranean-chickpea-salad-recipe/
Snacks continued to be bell peppers, tomatoes, apples, clementines. and raisins. Dinner was often flatbread and soup, or avocado. Not only is my 1 cup flour and water mix easy, but it’s just super fun to relieve stress after work by kneading the dough.
The weekend is literally the hardest time for me because I’m sitting at home with the junk food calling to me and zero healthy food prepped. Overall, my head felt better and my energy came back. I had a little congestion so I still didn’t work out…
Week 3:
I had 2 (or more) pieces of dark chocolate. Sue me. Breakfast was more fruit. Mostly strawberries, blackberries, and kiwi. I actually received my Hello Fresh this week and I had picked vegan meals ahead of time. I had veggie bibimbap and chickpea/cauliflower bowl without the provided egg and sour cream.
My go to for dinner is what I have named the Avocadilla. Basically a quesadilla with avocado instead of cheese. You can add beans and rice to mix it up. But sometimes I just had a smoothie. Snacks continued to be bell peppers, tomatoes, raisins, apples, and grapes
Final weekend of the fast and I gave up early. Like I said, weekends are the hardest and this weekend involved a 4 hour road trip to my parents. What is a roadtrip without a stop at Sheetz? Of course the parents tried to be supportive, but I quickly caved to their normal eating habits. Most importantly, this was Super Bowl weekend and I decided to break my fast with the usual wings and dips and other junk food. It tasted amazing and was almost worth the time I spent in the bathroom afterwards. I will continue to eat a majority of fruits and veggies, but I will slowly begin adding meat and dairy back into my diet.
There are a ton of good websites and recipes with more information. Here’s a good one to get you started
Since starting my new corporate job, I was unable to take a vacation until I saved up enough days. Ten months later, I saw my chance with Memorial Day weekend. I could take a 10 day vacation while only using 4 actual vacation days. I invited my family, seriously procrastinated on planning, and failed trying to save up some extra money. Hey, I’m 23. I’m not perfect.
Day 1
Our trip began Saturday, May 26. I drove up to my parents the night before so we could fly out of Newark together. It was a red-eye flight that got into Iceland 9:00 am on Sunday. There’s always the stress of getting to the gate on time and dealing with security. Luckily, the line was fairly average and we got through it fast. There’s two other thing everyone dreads in security: the pat down and the bag check. This time, the agent had a sense of humor and announced to the line, “Empty out pockets and take off your belts. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t want to pat you down.” My brother and I got through the line fine and were putting on our shoes when we realized Mom got selected for a bag check. She began thinking of all the things in her purse that set off the alarm. Was it her eye drops? Did she forget to take out her knife? You know, normal mom-purse stuff. Turns out she had too much change and the coins set the machine off. Who knew that was a thing?
The gate itself was getting some work done. A little plastic surgery. There was no pre-boarding waiting area since all the chairs were gone and everything was walled off except of the gate itself. We were early, and hungry, enough that we went to the closest restaurant for burgers while we waited. We were tired because it was late and we had that post dinner food coma. We were getting anxious to settle in on the plane and leave. We got our seat assignments and actually got to sit together in the exit row. Sitting together is rare as a standby group. We usually get placed in the leftover middle seats that no one wanted to pay for. Naturally for this flight, I claimed middle because I’m a good person or something. We got settled and I started The Greatest Showman. An hour later the plane left the gate. You heard me an hour. Why, you may ask? Well, because it was May and a chilly 90 degrees Fahrenheit causing the wing iced over. Frozen. Trust me, exit row provided a good view. They had to dig the de-icing equipment out of storage before we could fly. My dad provided the scientific reason.
An aircraft equipped with wing fuel tanks may have fuel that is at a sufficiently low temperature such that it lowers the wing skin temperature to below the freezing point. This phenomenon is known as cold-soaking. Liquid water coming in contact with a wing, which is at a below freezing temperature, will freeze to the wing surfaces. Cold-soaking can be caused by fueling an aircraft with cold fuel. Where fuel tanks are located in the wings of aircraft, the temperature of the fuel greatly affects the temperature of the wing surface above and below these tanks. If there is rain or high humidity, ice can form on the cold-soaked wing and accumulate over time. This ice can be invisible to the eye and is often referred to as clear ice. Cold soaking can cause frost to form on the upper and lower wing under conditions of high relative humidity. This is one type of contamination that can occur in above freezing weather at airports where there is normally no need for deicing equipment, or where the equipment is deactivated for the summer. This contamination typically occurs where the fuel in the wing tanks becomes cold-soaked to below freezing temperatures because of low temperature fuel uplifted during the previous stop or cruise at altitude where low temperatures are encountered, or both, and a normal descent is made into a region of high humidity. In such instances, frost will form on the under and upper sides of the fuel tank region during the ground turn-around time and tends to reform quickly even when removed.
After finally taking off and soon after finishing The Greatest Showman, I put on Lilo and Stitch and fell asleep. It was a restless sleep as most plane naps are. At one point, I half woke up and Mom asked if I wanted some of her Cabernet. I want to do more research on this, but it’s said that your taste changes when you’re in the air. That’s one reason why airplane food is nasty. My little sip of red wine while I was basically still asleep was very unpleasant, so I rolled over and went back to sleep.
Day 2
Sunday morning after we landed was pretty uneventful, and by uneventful I mean this was the worst day of the whole trip. It wasn’t Iceland’s fault. It was our first day in a new country and we were seriously sleep deprived and it was raining. The plan was to pick up the rental car, drive into the city, take a nap, then check into our room for the night.
I was in charge of basically everything except the rental car (still under age) and lodgings. Mom handled those so I can’t provide detailed recommendations. We took the airport shuttle to the rental car, got our manual sedan, GPS, and the extra insurance (recommended for gravel roads and suicidal sheep). Another side tangent: while Iceland in a European country, driving is very American. The driving wheel is on the left and you drive on the right side of the road. We took route 1 around the outside of the island, but in the summer the F-roads are open for exploring the center. These roads are poorly maintained and require 4-wheel drive, but offer views not seen by most tourists. While I’m already on a tangent, I’ll use this to talk about money. It’s super easy to convert! 1 Icelandic Krona is worth 0.01 USD. If you’re buying something worth 10,000 ISK, you just move the decimal place over to get about a $100. In reality, it’s more like $80, but the trick is easy to remember. We did a rental car and hotels. We were willing to pay a little extra for comfort and sanity. However, there are cheaper options to look into. Get a camper van and travel around hippie style.
After picking up the car, we drive into the city. Our base for the next two nights was in the capital, Reykjavik. As I mentioned, we were all tired from the flight and had some time to kill before we could check into our room, so we parked the car near the check in office and took a nap. The check in office was on one street and the room was in a different location. With some difficulty we found the office and eventually found the key to the room in a lock box that opened with a password from the confirmation email. We then spent too long walking up and down the same road trying to find the entrance. We stopped at a random café for lunch since we were cold, wet, tired, and lost. We found the street we were looking for which did not have a road sign but had the name of the road written on the side of a building. Also, happened to be the same road we parked on car on before walking all over. It took several more minutes to figure out how to work the locks and get into the room. It was a little more like an apartment above a shop than the hotel room I was expecting, but it had a kitchen which is great because food in Iceland is expensive. We took more time to rest up and warm up before getting ready to actually explore the city.
We went down to the waterfront first to check out the Harpa Concert Hall and the Solfar (Sun Voyager) sculpture, both very cool works of architecture. Then hiked up the hill to see the Hallgimskirkja church. The church is great for pictures outside, inside, and at the top. I want to say it was around $10 to take the elevator up but I could be wrong. Even though the city has so much to see, we were pretty exhausted from the whole trip so far and just grabbed gas station sandwiches as well as morning breakfast and went to bed. There is a restaurant by the church called Café Loki. We didn’t try it but I’ve heard good things.
Day 3
The Golden Circle. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions since it’s close to the city and still offers impressive sights. Think of Yosemite to San Francisco or Niagara Falls to Toronto. The park starts less than an hour drive from the city and offers waterfalls, geysers, and craters. I am very poor with the Icelandic language so I don’t know whether to call the park Þingvellir or Thingvellir. It was anglicized as Thingvellir and I don’t want to keep attempting to type it correctly as Þingvellir, so forgive me.
Thingvellir National Park. We started at the south of the circle traveling east and worked our way around. First stop was the Kerio Crater which had beautifully blue water and red volcanic rock. There are paths to walk along the rim and to go down to the water. Gullfoss and Geysir were next and conveniently 5 minutes away from each other. Gullfoss is a Niagara Falls level, huge waterfall. There is a path from the parking lot to walk next to the top of the falls, but it’s hard to get a good view of the full drop. Next are the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Geysir is known for launching water 230 feet into the air but it’s eruption times are infrequently. Strokkur is a few feet from Geysir and it known as a more reliable geyser. It erupts one every 5-10 minutes with heights averaging 55 feet. This was my first geyser and did not disappoint.
This afternoon was our first excursion I booked. Snorkeling at Silfra Fissure, a rift between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates. There’s no fish and you have to wear dry suits because it’s so cold, but the water is the clearest I’ve ever seen and the rock formation are super cool. I booked all our excursions through guidetoiceland.is and the company we used for the snorkeling was dive.is. I picked it because it offered hot chocolate and cookies. Our guides were cool and helpful. They take tons of pictures and share them with you to purchase. After snorkeling, we walked around the park exploring. There is a cute little park church near the water. Oxararfoss is another waterfall that drops between the boundary of the tectonic plates. The waterfall is famous for many cultural and environmental reasons, but it was also a filming location for Game of Thrones. It was used as the passage to the Bloody Gate of the Eyrie in Season 4 by both Stark sisters. It was also used for a scene South of the Wall with Ygritte and Tormund. Ok, I’m done nerding out – for now. We finished the day with traditional Icelandic Domino’s pizza and another night in Reykjavik.
Day 4
First day of the roadtrip and enjoying the southern coast. Taking Route 1 from Reykjavik to Vik, we stopped at 2 waterfalls, 2 beaches, and one out of the way plane crash. For the record, day 4 and 5 were my favorites. First waterfall was Seljalandfoss which has a path to walk around the back of the waterfall. Warning: you will get wet and wear good shoes. We were lucky enough to get a rainbow when we were there. Next waterfall was Skogafoss. You can walk right up to the base of this huge waterfall or take stairs up the side to see the top. At the top the walking path continued, following the river and some mini waterfall drops.
Ok so the next stop was a must for me. I said I wanted to see it whatever it took, and did I regret jinxing myself. The Solheimasandur plane crash is very popular on travel blogs and videos. In 1973, a United States Navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on this beach. The plane is still there and not too hard to find. There is a parking lot built for it off of Route 1 with a LONG walking trail leading to the plane – an hour for most people. (hint we were not most people). Researching for this document, I found some helpful advice. “Don’t go there in bad weather or strong wind either because the wind will be even stronger there with a massive sandstorm as well.” Guess what happened to us? I wished I timed how long it actually took us, but we walked there, took our pictures, and left all while dealing with incredible wind. Pretty sure we got sand everywhere just from it getting blown at us. We had to walk funny to keep from blowing over. It was pretty miserable, but weirdly also fun. What can I say? I like adventures and this was once in a lifetime. Although it was so windy my hair looks bad in all the pictures.
We ended the day with some more windy beaches. Dyrholaey was a stop mostly for their public bathroom. Rebel me didn’t pay the fee and jumped the turnstile. I’m sure when it’s not cold and windy, it’s more enjoyable. We took a picture with the popular arch and continued with our drive. Next beach was one of my favorites because it has cool rock formations and I’m weird. Reyisfjara is a black sand beach like most of Iceland, but this one has stacked rock columns on the side of the cliff. I don’t know how else to describe it. Also seen in Season 7 of Games of Thrones in scenes North of the Wall. After the beaches, we pulled into the village of Vik for the night.
Day 5
Poor planning on my part. I would have timed this better if I knew, but we had to wake up early and drive 2 hours to make our 10:00am glacier hike. Another fun excursion that was an incredible experience. Skaftafell glacier was the location for many movie scenes including Batman Begins, Interstellar, and Game of Thrones. We got geared up with crampons, ice picks, and helmets before walking out on the glacier! It was beautiful and truly like being on another planet. We even got to eat some glacier ice because it is considered so clean. Tourists are actually encouraged to drink tap water over buying water bottles. The rivers and streams are considered to be safe as well.
After the hike, we did another waterfall (I think we saw one every day) and some amazing beaches. Svartifoss waterfall was right next to the glacier and we did another quick hike despite being exhausted. The beaches were the highlight after the glacier. Jokulsarlon, or Diamond Beach, is aptly named for the broken off bits of ice that float in the lagoon and occasionally wash ashore. From there, we had a long 4 hour drive to our lodgings in Egilsstadir. It was a beautiful drive that I wish we enjoyed more if we weren’t all cranky. We managed to get our car stuck in sand when we pulled over for a photo shoot and had to get a local to help us dig the car out. We continued driving until we found a safer spot to take photos and stopped in Hofn for dinner. We arrived late in Egilsstadir, but we had an adorable cabin on the lake that I could stay at forever. I regret not splitting this day into 2.
Day 6
This begins the day and a half at Lake Myvatn. It was nice but I probably would have used the half day for the Eastfjords. One the drive from Egilsstadir to Myvatn, we stopped at Krafla’s Viti crater. I still prefer Kerio on the Golden Circle, but this one was pretty cool too. Close by was Dettifoss, which was THE BEST waterfall of the trip. Closer to the Lake was the Namafjall Hverir geothermal area. This was like a cool boiling bog. Across the street was the real attraction – Grjotagja Cave. For Game of Thrones fans, this is the cave Jon and Ygritte visited North of the Wall (where they had sex). It’s like a hot spring hidden in a cave, but for safety reasons, you’re not allowed to swim.
Dimmuborgir lava formations provided multiple walking paths to explore, but we took the shortest one to get to the Myvatn Nature Baths. The Nature Baths are similar to Blue Lagoon but less touristy and cheaper since its on the opposite side of the country. FYI they also accept student discounts. They didn’t provide towels, drinks, or mud facials like Blue Lagoon but it was a nice soak with gorgeous views of the lake at sunset. I have a note to check out Husavik if you have time, but we weren’t able to.
Day 7
Road trip day! That’s a whole 6 hour drive across northern Iceland. First stop outside of Myvatn was Godafoss. Another beautiful waterfall, but a bit of a let down after Dettifoss the day before. Then we charged on to the Snaefellsjokull Pennisula. To break up the drive, enjoy the towns of Akureyri and Blondos.
Since this day was ALL driving, I’ll use this time to explain my planning process. I knew we would be tried at this point so I figured the peninsula would be a could place to spend time not driving and relax. Again, I wish I used the time at the Eastfjords. After the excitement of the trip and the sites we saw, Snaefellsjokull was a bit of a letdown.
Day 8
The final excursion I scheduled was whale watching out of Olafsvik. This however was cancelled due to weather, but I was able to reschedule for the next day. I wish I just took the refund and you will soon see why. Instead we drove to Stykkishdmur, a cute little fishing village, with a cool shark museum and little lighthouse. At the shark museum, we explored a showroom and sat through an informational video. At the end, we tasted dried shark meat. I remember it tasting like really salty fish jerky. Out back, we saw the hanging shark meat and cute ponies.
We had to drive across a bridge to Sugandisey where the lighthouse was located. There was a local tourist shop we found to ask directions and shop for souvenirs. Another popular tourist stop is Kirkjufell hill and the waterfall below it. We drove past this multiple times before realizing it was what we were looking for. Personally, I don’t understand why this is a highlight out of all the other wonderful attractions.
We still have time to kill and I wanted to see Snaefellsjokull, the entrance to the center of the Earth according to Jules Verne. We spent 2 hours driving around the mountain driving to get closer, but all the roads were closed. The clouds were covering the mountain so even though we knew it was right there, we never saw it. After that frustrating waste of time, we turned in for the night.
Day 9
Whale watching take 2. I wrote in my notes it was a 3 hour tour. I don’t know if that was literal or a Gilligan’s Island joke. So the tour was cancelled the day before because it was too windy and the waves were rough. The next day wasn’t much better. Did I mention I get super motion sick? While Bradlee and I were feeding the fishing, Mom was able to see the 1 whale spotted on the trip. Apparently it was a big deal to see a sperm whale at that time of year, but I couldn’t care less. We had some soup at a café to settle our stomachs before driving south to Reykjavik. We drove 3 hours to our hotel near the airport. I know a lot of people get reservations for Blue Lagoon on their first day, but I strongly recommend doing it on the last day. Having a spa day after a busy vacation and before a long plane ride was perfect. I enjoyed it more than the Nature Bath at Myvatn, but the one con was it was crowded. Expected for a tourist spot but still a little annoying.
Day 10
We had to say goodbye to Iceland and took a morning flight back to Newark.
With Disney+ coming out I wanted an excuse to binge movies and this seemed like a good one. Although I don’t know how I’m going to actually decide anything because I truly love all of them. Now logistically, I wanted to film this and edit it a certain way, but my vision didn’t match my current skill level…So I’m just typing it for now. Maybe I’ll circle back and try filming another time.
I will have different categories to help me decide – Best Princess, Best Prince, Best Villain, and Best Story. I will also throw out my favorite side characters, quotes, and songs.
Movie 1: Snow White 1937 We all remember the story of the girl accepting candy from a stranger then getting sexually assault while in a coma. Wait, that’s not how you remember it? All jokes aside, the run time is only 83 minutes and half of it is b-plot dwarf shenanigans. Also opening credits and overtures need to come back into style. This is the movie I have seen the least, but I’m exciting to see it again. I get that style of singing was popular for it’s time, but it’s not my jam. “I’m Wishing” annoys me so much. The Prince and Snow White fall in love too fast. The Huntsman calls Snow White the little princess but she’s dressed in rags and cleaning? Is it clarified in the movie that she’s the step daughter? (yes, but it takes 38 minutes). The huntsman tells her to run and hide in the woods. Does he realize she has like zero survival skills? Also this scene totally scared me as a kid, but I’m loving the traditional Disney animation now. Wait, apparently talking to woodland creatures is all it takes to survive. “7 little chairs. There must be 7 little children. Oh look, a pickaxe.” The whistle why you work scene made me really happy. 22 minutes in and enter the dwarfs. Shenanigans ensure. Grumpy is so sweet; it’s adorable. Over an hour in and we finally get to the poison apple scene. Dang, the Evil Queen’s death was really anticlimactic. The dwarfs made the glass coffin and kept “eternal vigil”. How long was she asleep? My guess is less than a year. Also, did they poke holes in the glass for her to breathe? The prince goes up to mourn and kisses the dead girl not knowing it would wake her up. Who kisses dead strangers on the lips? HOW IS THAT TRUE LOVE? I swear he has a whole 2 minutes of screen time. Favorite song: Whistle why you work Honorable mentions: Someday my prince will come, Heigh-Ho Favorite character: Dopey In the running for least favorite prince, princess and villain, but overall I really enjoyed it – like a lot.
Movie 2: Cinderella 1950 The movie where a girl just wants a night of to party, but gets stalked by a guy with a foot fetish. Also, a lot of Tom and Jerry shenanigans. Villain’s motive: Spite? Oh my gosh, I forgot how much I love Cinderella’s character. The King’s motive for throwing the ball is finding a girl for his son to knock up which is just awful. The scene when the mice are making the dress was one of my favorites as a child. This is one Jack and Gus versus Lucifer scene I can admit makes me smile. Maybe that’s why I get upset every time they destroy the dress. Can we appreciate the black choker Fairy Godmother thought went well with the blue/white ballgown? Almost an hour and we finally see Prince Charming. The King gets more screen time and personality than the Prince. Wait, she didn’t even know he was the Prince the whole time? Cinderella most have booked it from the first chime of midnight to the last, because they put some distance between themselves and the castle. “If the shoe fits” Did they do the whole movie just for that pun? Wait, did Lucifer just die by falling out the tower window? Dang that’s dark. And black choker again on her wedding day. Favorite song: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes Honorable mentions: Bippity Boppity Boo Favorite character: Cinderella, I guess. No one else is really likable. The movie is honestly super boring. That’s my analysis.
Movie 3: Sleeping Beauty 1959 The one where the girl pokes her figure then gets sexually assault while in a coma. Full transparency: I love this movie. Another one where the kings arrange a marriage for political gain, but couple falls in love, so it’s okay? I’m saying it now. The fairies are my favorite characters. I love that Maleficent was like ‘Oh, I didn’t get an invite to this party. I’m gonna curse the baby.’ What a motive. The pink v. blue debate starts 13 minutes into the movie and I love it. Philip is the first Disney Prince that is hot, has personality, and actually has more than 1 line. Stephen, Hubert, and the bard get drunk while waiting for Aurora to arrive, and it is the weirdest scene. No one thought to warn Aurora? Like, hey girl, avoid needles or you’ll be cursed to eternal sleep. That should have come up in the “You’re a princess” conversation. Maleficent is full on monologuing to Philip. I was going to question why the fairies weren’t directly helping with Philip’s escape, but it was mentioned they can only use their powers for good. Oh wait, Merryweather turned the crow to stone. Why couldn’t they do that to all the goblins? IT’S FINALLY DRAGON TIME. Psh now it’s the kissing part. HOW IS IT TRUE LOVE WHEN YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER?! Nothing like ending the movie with a romantic waltz with the blue v. pink war continuing. Favorite song: Once Upon a Dream Honorable mentions: All the instrumental background bits Favorite character: Merryweather If you’re looking for a classic Disney movie, this is by far my favorite.
Movie 4: Little Mermaid 1989 The fish out of water story where the girl sells her soul for man she’s never met. Stupid girl. Despite how much I disagree with Ariel watching the movie as an adult, this was by far my favorite as a kid because MERMAIDS. What we learn from the opening of the movie is Ariel is self-centered, head-strong, and reckless. Ursula was banished by Triton and decides to use Ariel for revenge. Is this the first villain with a REAL motive? I will give Ariel some love at first sight points, because Eric is looking fine, adventurous and a hopeless romantic. However, he’s not sell your voice and soul to a witch level of hotness. Eric half recognizes Ariel and guesses she is the one, but then changes his mind when she can’t talk. Idiot. He then dresses her up and takes her on dates, but is still obsessing over the Voice. He finally chooses Ariel, but then Vanessa shows up with her witch powers and he decides to marry her instead. Ariel manages to break the spell, but fails to get the kiss. Eric has been pretty useless the whole movie with Ariel having to save his life multiple times. He tries though. He finally manages to save the day with his sailing skills by ramming Ursula. Okay, true love and happy endings aside. WHO GIVES AWAY THEIR 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO BE MARRIED AND NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN?? THEY’VE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR THREE DAYS!! Favorite song: Poor Unfortunately Soul. Hands down. I sing this ALL the time. Honorable mentions: Part of your world (Reprise) Favorite character: Ursula, I guess. A lot of the characters don’t have a great personality. At least, Ursula has sass. I do love mermaids and I love Ursula, but the movie has a stupid plot.
Movie 5: Beauty and the Beast 1991 Where the girl is a prisoner to a monster and falls in love with his library. Belle is the princess I relate to the most because she’s book nerd who wants adventure. I know the live action answered a lot of my original gripes, but I’m reviewing the cartoon so here we go! How old was the prince? How long was the curse? Why didn’t the town people remember the castle? Is the enchantress the real villain? Is it really a bookshop if it’s just a guy in town where no one reads? GASTON IS THE REAL VILLAIN BECAUSE HE DISRESPECTS BOOKS…and also women! Belle is so graceful, intelligent, brave, and sassy. I love her. Okay, this may be my favorite Renaissance movie. I can’t stop smiling. Why is Gaston obsessed with Belle? Is it because she’s the most beautiful? Is it the challenge of the hunt? I just don’t buy his motive. Is it really lame I love Cogsworth’s baroque joke? “If it ain’t baroque, don’t fix it.” Gaston thinks selling Belle’s dad to the asylum will convince Belle to marry him? This guy is clueless. Beast starts falling in love after the wolf attack when Belle stays and tends his wounds. Cogsworth’s one liners though: “Flowers, chocolates, promises you don’t intend to keep”. Belle starts falling in love after Beast gives her the library. Same girl. The Beauty and the Beast waltz is so beautiful and classic. Beast lets her go because he loves her, and the movie could really use a good ballad right there. If I Can’t Love Her or Evermore – just throwing out some name ideas. Gaston begs like a baby, stabs Beast in the back, then falls to his death. Seems appropriate. Anyone else think he looks better as a Beast than a human? Just me? Okay. Favorable song: The Mob Song Honorable mentions: Belle (Reprise), Gaston Favorite character: I truly love Belle. Classic princess movie with humor and adventure, and a personal favorite.
Movie 6: Aladdin 1992 The only princess movie named after a boy who lies and steals to get the girl. It opens with Robin Williams improve and it is beautiful and I want the full hidden recording. Jafar’s motive is power and that’s an acceptable motive. Iago is the most annoying character in Disney history. Why do I remember him being more likable in King of Thieves? (Follow up blog idea: straight to DVD sequels). Jasmine had Raja attack her suitor and I relate. I love the scene when Jasmine and Aladdin meet in the market and she pretends to be crazy. It’s my favorite. She casually pull vaults across rooftops? What a boss. So the rule is touch nothing but the lamp. If Aladdin is the diamond in the rough, does that rule only apply to him? Obviously Aladdin gets punished for Abu, but it doesn’t seem fair. I’ve never understood how Abu gets the lamp back from Jafar. There’s no moment for him to steal it back. ROBIN WILLIAMS. Aladdin is such a liar. Just tell the truth, idiot. Jasmine is all “I want to marry for love” then chooses the guy she’s known for 2 days. THAT’S NOT LOVE. Also first movie where they kiss before the finale. I remembered Jasmine flirting with Jafar to distract him, but does she just go around kissing everyone? Also the first movie where they don’t get married. They make us wait until the third movie for that. Favorite song: Friend Like Me Honorable mentions: One Jump Ahead (reprise), Prince Ali (reprise) Favorite characters: Genie and Jasmine My only complaint about the movie is the title. Acceptable titles: Arabian Nights, Genie, Jasmine…
Movie 7: Pocahontas 1995 The first princess movie loosely based on a true story. On the ship ride from England to American, we see a brief glance into the personality of the characters. John Smith (MEL GIBSON), Thomas (CHRISTIAN BALE), and crew are fun and have amazing accents. Radcliffe, henchman, and dog are super unlikable. Pocahontas has a wild spirit like Ariel and is against an arranged marriage like Jasmine. Also there’s a talking tree. “My bark is worse than my bite.” Shoutout to Meeko who keeps stealing food. I relate. While Radcliffe sings about his gold obsession, John just wants an adventure and I love that. I always hated how Pocahontas and John just magically understood each other. I like how they didn’t make Kocoum a bad guy. He is a respectable warrior and truly cares for his people, but just too serious for Pocahontas’ taste. Grandma Willow fawning over John reminds me of Grandmother Fa from Mulan. The men on both sides are wanting to fight without even talking first. *eyeroll* Men. Kocoum loved Pocahontas and got protective when he saw her and John kissing, which led Thomas to having to shoot Kocoum to save John. What a great scene. Then Pocahontas stops the fighting with her courage and John takes a bullet for the Chief. Another great scene. I’ve always wondered the medical part of the ending. Does he still have the bullet in his chest? What are the chances he’d actually survive the journey back to England? Couldn’t the tribe medicine man help? THE PRINCESS DECIDES NOT TO RUN AWAY WITH THE MAN SHE JUST MET. WHAT A TWIST. Favorite song: Colors of the Wind Honorable mention: Just Around the Riverbend, If I Never Knew You (Cheetah Girls version) Favorite character: I really liked John Smith’s character Did John Smith steal the show or what?!
Movie 8: Mulan 1998 The one where the girl has to cross-dress to get anything accomplished. I freaking love this movie. We get introduced to Mulan writing a cheat sheet on her arm and I relate. We get little scenes that show she is smart, caring, and talented even though she’s not society’s expectation of wife material. The matchmaker scene never fails to make me laugh. Shoutout to Mulan’s makeup remover during Reflection. “Teach your daughter to hold her tongue in a man’s presence” I’m angry. Shoutout to Mulan’s hair cutting skills. Eddie Murphy appreciation sentence. Dishonor on your cow. Does “limp noodle” mean something or am I reading too much into it? Li Shang is man goals – leader, supportive, feminist, and hot. He doesn’t come to Mulan’s rescue at any point, but trusts and respects her. WE STAN. They sing their way to the front line and everyone is dead. Princess movie with the largest death toll? Shang’s troops fighting the Hun army and Mulan burying them in the snow is ICONIC. The men are taking credit for saving China SMH. Mulan making the men dress in drag is time consuming and impractical and I love it. Shan Yu says “the soldier from the mountains” NOT GENDER SPECIFIC. IS SHAN YU A FEMINIST TOO? They defeat him by blowing him up with fireworks. Did I mention this movie has a lot of death? The Emperor is hilarious. “You fight good”. You can do better than that, Shang. GRANDMOTHER FA’S ONE LINERS ARE WHAT I LIVE FOR. Favorite song: I’ll Make a Man Out of You. No debate. Honorable mention: The instrumental Mulan action theme. Favorite character: Li Shang, Mulan, Grandmother Fa, literally everyone Officially my favorite Renaissance movie.
Movie 9: Princess and the Frog 2009 The start of the modern era of Disney. Tiana is raised in a loving family that teaches her how to work hard. Somehow her dad dies because Disney princesses can’t have both parents. Naveen is a party boy with no sense of responsbility. What’s the villian’s motive? Money? I do appreciate the twist on the classic Frog Prince story. While the prince turned into a frog, Doctor Voodoo turned the royal sidekick into Prince Playboy. He convinced Sidekick to trick rich girl into marrying him and split the money. The lover frogs are in the bayou trying to become human again. They realize their individual dreams would be incomplete without each other and find their new dream. The whole story fails to grab my attention, but the end when Ray dies makes me cry everytime. Favorite Song: Almost There Honorable mentions: Dig a little deeper Favorite character: Lewis and Ray The only redeeming thing in this movie is Tiana. Everything else is just meh. Analysis: Not great
Movie 10: Tangled 2010 OMG OMG OMG I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE and yes I also watch the TV show. Open with Zachary Levi exposition-narration. I love the little touches of detail. Gothel calls Raps “flower”, follows up hurtful comments with “I’m just teasing”, and focuses her love on Raps hair. Flynn brushes her hair out of her face and treats her like a person. Flynn climbs the tower and Raps knocks him out repeatable. As she should have. Flynn is one smooth dude with the ladies. The scene when Raps is finally out of the tower and it’s cutting between the happy and sad reactions is hilarious. I keep forgetting to take notes because the movie is too distracting. When they are in the cave, the water sudden stops rising for them to have a bonding moment then suddenly starts flooding again. Flynn lost the frying pan? But suddenly Raps has it back again? Raps starts calling him Eugene and he stops calling her Blondie. They make it to the kingdom which is my favorite part. But no one recognizes she’s the lost princess? How many mysterious blonde, green eyed lost girls are there? Then the famous lantern scene which is so romantic. Cool, calm, collected Flynn actually gets scared when he realizes Raps is in trouble. The manipulation on Gothel’s part is truly impressive – evil but impressive. Flynn getting aggressive in the jail cell trying to figure out what happen to Raps, it is like the hottest thing. Raps realizes shes the princess because she’s been subconsciously painting the sun symbol. Flynn gets broken out of jail and races to Raps rescue. Gothel casually stabs him. Pascal trips Gothel and she falls to her death. Happy endings for everyone! Favorite song: Kingdom Dance. Definitely my favorite. Honorable mention: When Will My Life Begin (reprise), I’ve got a Dream Favorite characters: Flynn, Raps, Pascal, Max 100% my favorite
Movie 11: Brave 2012 The only Pixar Princess to be included. I may be partial to this movie solely because of the Celtic theme and accents. It’s the first movie to not focus on the romance. It’s a Mother/Daughter love story. AH I forgot how much I love listening to Kelly MacDonald’s voice (Check out Runaway Bride). Classic story of a teenage princess rebelling against her responsibilities and arranged marriage. Mother and Daughter are both talking, but neither are listening. The suitors arrive to compete for her hand, but Merida fights for her own hand WHICH I LOVE. Merida runs away into the woods and magic ensues. Merida goes on adventure with Bear-Mom to try and undo the spell. Hilarity ensues. It gets serious when Bear-Mom turns more Bear. Side quest with finding out the Mordu backstory. HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED THIS MOVIE IS VERY FREAKY FRIDAY?! “I’ll take you with my bear hands.” haha pun. Favorite song: Touch the Sky is a frequent song on my “Sing in the Shower” Playlist because it’s so good Favorite characters: Merida, but the boys are fun comic relief. Fun movie that I enjoy, but nothing mind blowing
Movie 12: Frozen 2013 The over hyped one with 2 princesses that focuses on sisterly love but still ends with romantic love. Soundtrack appreciation sentence. Young Anna is my favorite character. Adult Anna is my favorite character. Hans is a DICK. Alan Tudyk appreciation sentence. “You can’t marry a man you just met”. MIC DROP. I’m all for Elsa’s self care retreat in the mountain. Sometimes you just need to let your hair down. You do you boo. Enter Olaf and casually ignore the fact that Elsa can create life. Kristoff takes Anna to the Northern Mountain. Elsa loses control on Anna and creates Marshmallow. Kristoff takes Anna to his troll family and the family assumes they should be together. Kristoff takes Anna to have Hans kiss her. “If only there was someone out there who loved you.” LET ME AT HIM. Seriously Hans? Who believes that they said their marriage vows before she died? There were no witnesses. He has no power over Arendelle. While Hans left Anna to die and is chasing Elsa, Kristoff runs back to the rescue like the adorable hero he is. “Some people are worth melting for”. Olaf is my true love. When I watched this for the first time and Sven fell in the ice, I was devastated. Fun fact: My fingers turn white like Anna’s when I’m cold. Anna chose to die instead kissing Kristoff. Just kidding, she was saving her sister. Anna punching Hans was the best part of the movie. Kristoff ASKS PERMISSION before kissing Anna. Also, if you didn’t know, there is an end credit scene. Favorite song: First Time in Forever, First Time in Forever (Reprise) Honorable mentions: I feel like I’m required to say Let It Go =) Favorite characters: Anna and Olaf Great movie, but not as good as everyone says
Movie 13: Moana 2016 I love this one. Soundtrack appreciate and Lin Manuel Miranda shout out. Also shout out to Auli’i Cravalho for being the youngest princess. Disney Grandma’s are always the best. Baby Moana is the cutest. The personalities of all the people on the island are hilarious. Alan Tudyk appreciation sentence. I like how Moana tries to sail beyond the reef and fails the first time. It shows the challenge. Grandma shows Moana the boats and gives her the Heart. I love the theory that the Heart was keeping Grandma alive and once she gave it to Moana, her time was over. Moana sails to Maui and they begin their quest. First roadblock is killer Mad Max coconuts. Second roadblock is greedy crab in monster underworld. Maui fails in the fight which shows the challenge. You get backstory and character development. They fail and split up. Moana gets encouraged by force ghost Grandma and continues the quest. “I got your back chosen one. Go save the world.” We STAN Maui. The villain Te Ka is an anger lava monster who just wants her heart back. Te Fiti gets the heart back and takes a nap. I relate. Favorite song: How Far I’ll Go Honorable mentions: You’re Welcome, I am Moana Favorite characters: Maui Princess movie about a quest and no love interest? I’m sold!
Best Princess: Hardest choice to make. I’m not gonna do it.
Best Prince: John Smith, Li Shang, Flynn Rider I like a prince that is strong and supportive. John Smith wanted an adventure and found Pocahontas. He opened his mind to new perspectives and their culture. He even took an arrow for the guy that tried to execute him. Li Shang respected the hell out of Mulan’s out of the box solutions to problems. In the final battle, he followed her lead to protect the emperor. Flynn Rider is just plain dreamy. He is so sweet and considerate, and just wanted the best for Raps.
Best Villain: Ursula, Shan Yu, Gothel I like a villain that isn’t stupid or dumb down. I also don’t like them to be a one dimensional. Give them personality. Ursula is so sassy and fun while still being manipulative for revenge. Shan Yu commanded the entire Hun army. He didn’t have a ton of lines, but all of them were great. Gothel takes a little more to analyze. She raised a daughter to use for eternal youth. Imagine having to grow up isolated and never knowing true parental love. Even once Raps left, Gothel manipulated the situation to get Raps to go back with her. Then STABS Flynn.
Best Story: Mulan, Tangled, Moana I don’t like a story that’s too original. That being said, none of these movies were original ideas. Mulan is a legit war movie. Tangled is more traditional, but adds new elements that improve the cliche stereotypes. Moana is the most original and (besides Brave) is the least “princess-y” movie. She goes on a quest to save her people, like Mulan.
MY OFFICIAL DISNEY PRINCESS MOVIE RANKING: 1. Tangled 2. Mulan 3. Aladdin 4. Beauty and the Beast 5. Sleeping Beauty 6. Moana 7. Frozen 8. Brave 9. Pocahontas 10. Little Mermaid 11. Snow White 12. Princess and the Frog 13. Cinderella
I happened to stumble across a YouTube video by Jazzy Vlogs a few months ago and accepted her challenge.
I would only eat food from A to Z. That means one food for every letter and it’s has to be in order. No mixing.
I drafted up a grocery list before shopping because I hate strolling the aisles aimlessly.
A – apple B – banana C – cereal D – doughnut E – egg F – french fry G – green tea H – hamburger I – ice cream J – jello K – kiwi L – lemon cookie M – M&M N – noodles O – olives P – pesto Q – quesadilla R – rice S – salsa T – tomato soup U – udon noodles V – vinegar W – wine X – XXX vitamin water Y – yogurt Z – zucchini
Some of these were obviously harder than others (looking at you U and X). If you think you have better ideas, let me know!
